Short post this week.  We just completed our largest transaction to date and like all deals, it had its share of ups and downs (thanks to the ownership of Service Truck Depot for putting your trust in Patrick and I).  But it’s also now been 10 years since we started Redcap&Truss so it’s a great time to be reflective.  Starting a business is not easy, even one that requires little to no start-up capital and has few employees.  There are a lot of emotional roller-coaster days with owning and operating a business and an advisory firm like ours, we feel even higher highs and lower lows as we not only manage our own business but see the impact of decisions on our client’s businesses (a leverage effect?).

How do we make it through – Grit.  We just grind.  It matters that we grind – it matters that we put the time in to understand our client’s situation so that we can give the best (often unvarnished) advice for them and their family.  It matters that we really try to understand all parties perspectives which allow us to look at deals as win/win and fair as opposed to a win/lose (which almost never get done).  We take incredible pride in that and its seldom easy, but it matters.

As the snow is falling here and Winter seems to have finally hit Calgary, I’d like to recommend a book by Angela Duckworth titled “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance”.  You can find a link to it here.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you are thinking about buying a business or selling yours.
